Clarke Ruth - Bass
Canadian bass Clarke Ruth recently
appeared at the Semperoper, Dresden as ALESSIO in Bellini's La
sonnambula and at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein as PHANUEL in
Massenet's Hérodiade.
Clarke has been a member of the ensemble at the Stadttheater Gießen since 2022. In the 2024/25 season he will be performing COUNT WALDNER in Strauss' Arabella, PHAROAH in Rossini's Moses in Egypt, FERRANDO in Verdi's Il trovatore and WINTERGREEN in Gershwin's Wintergreen for President, and BASS SOLO in Handel's Alexander’s Feast.
His stage repertoire includes SPARAFUCILE Rigoletto, GREMIN Eugene Onegin, ARIODATE in Handel's Xerxes, NOURABAD Pearl Fishers, ABBOTT in Britten's Curlew River, COUNT JERZABINKA in Lehár's Mitislaw der Moderne, MOCENIGO in Donizetti's Caterina Cornaro, QUINCE in Britten's Midsummer Night's Dream, ANGELOTTI Tosca and PUBLIO La clemenza di Tito, SARASTRO Magic Flute, and COLLINE La Bohème.
In 2022, Clarke graduated from the Cologne University of Music and Dance with a Master's in Opera Performance and he was a finalist in the Wilhelm Stenhammer International Music Competition in Norköpping, Sweden, and in July 2021, Clarke won the 'Concours International de Chant de Clermont Ferrand' and was awarded the role of ALESSIO from Bellini's La sonnambula in a tour of France.
In the summer of 2020, Clarke had participated in the International Opera Workshop, led by Verena Keller. In the summer of 2019, Clarke sang the role of BARTOLO in Opernakademie Bad Orb's production of Le nozze di Figaro. Clarke has also sang PETER Haensel und Gretel with the HofgartenOrchester Bonn in 2020.
In Canada, Clarke completed his Bachelor's degree at the University of Western Ontario, where he studied with bass-baritone Brian McIntosh.
